Barriers to Parental Involvement in the Education of Learners with Intellectual Disabilities

This study is an in-depth qualitative literature review on the barriers to parental involvement in education of learners with intellectual disabilities. The adopted Paulo Freire’s theory attempt illustrate significant role that parents are supposed play their children findings revealed enhanced disabilities include: low level education, teachers’ negative attitude towards both affected and parents, economic constraints, stigmatization disabilities, lack support, stress/depression, knowledge skills, number siblings family, mismatched expectations (between teachers), absence legal/policy frameworks involvement, clear channels communication between school personnel and, severity child’s disability. As a result findings, some suggestions enhance given, these emancipation change attitude, specialized training for all persons handling disability, establishment positive home-school working relationships, proper legislation people civic human rights development policy framework guide school-home collaborations.
